Retirement Age Update 2025: No Change for Central Government Employees, Confirms Centre

The central government has officially announced that there will be no increase in the retirement age or old-age pension grants for its employees until at least April 2025. This confirmation was given by Union Minister of State for Personnel, Jitendra Singh, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on March 19, 2025.

Retirement Age Remains at 60 Years

Currently, the retirement age for most central government employees is 60 years. This rule is clearly stated under Fundamental Rule (F.R.) 56(a). According to this rule, a government employee must retire on the last day of the month in which they turn 60 years old.

Despite rumors and demands for changes, the government has confirmed that no proposals are being considered to change this retirement age.

Clarification by Union Minister

Minister Jitendra Singh responded to a question in Parliament stating that no formal proposal to increase the retirement age has been submitted to the central government. He also added that retirement age data for both central and state government employees is not maintained centrally, as individual states have the authority to decide the retirement rules for their own employees.

Differences Among States

While the central government maintains a fixed retirement age of 60 years, states are allowed to set their own policies. This leads to differences across the country. For example, the Haryana government recently increased the retirement age of its employees from 58 to 60 years, and also raised the retirement age of Group D employees to 62 years from March 13, 2025.

This flexibility results in uneven retirement rules, creating a sense of unfairness among employees from different states.

No Old-Age Pension Hike Till April 2025

Alongside retirement age, the government also confirmed that there will be no increase in old-age pension grants until April 2025. This means pensioners will continue to receive the same benefits without any revision during this period.

Conclusion

As of now, central government employees will continue to retire at the age of 60, with no changes planned in the near future. There will also be no hike in pension amounts until April 2025. Employees are advised to follow official announcements and stay connected with their departments for accurate information.
